Music

We are delighted to have been designated by North Tyneside Music Education Hub as a Music Mark School in recognition of the value we place on music.

At Benton Dene Primary children are taught to become better musicians and to think more musically. It is our intent that children should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose and to listen with discriminationWe understand that music can inspire and motivate children and play an important role in their personal development as well as their emotional wellbeing. It can also help children develop a greater appreciation of the world we live in, by understanding different cultures and societies. We encourage pupils to develop a love of music by performing, singing, composing and listening to a wide range of music. All children have the opportunity to perform through assemblies and shows in addition to optional 1:1 or small group peripatetic lessons which run throughout the week.

Benton Dene Primary delivers a broad and balanced music curriculum, in line with national requirements, as well as a range of performance opportunities enabling pupils to:

  • Develop their musical skills by offering opportunities to perform to an audience.

  • Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.

  • Learn to sing and use their voices.

  • Create and compose music on their own and alongside their peers.

  • Have the opportunities to learn a musical instrument, use technology properly and to progress to the next level of musical excellence.

  • Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

In addition to the music offered in school, children can also access free weekend music sessions via North Tyneside Music Hub: https://ntmeh.org.uk/activities-for-young-people
