Purpose of Study
Learning a foreign language provides an important opening to other countries and their cultures. It should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world; it should also enable them to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to respond to its speakers in both speech and writing.
Learning a foreign language is all about communication. The teaching of a foreign language should provide opportunities for pupils to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and experience arts and culture in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning of other languages, equipping them with the confidence to travel, study and work in other countries.
